Bright Dental Brianna Rafetto D.M.D., P.A. of Middletown, Delaware, never stands still when it comes to acquiring training and technologies to support additional and advanced dentistry services. With Dr. Rafetto’s commitment to ongoing education and investments in state-of-the-art tools, there is certain to be a treatment to restore or sustain the health, function, and beauty of your smile. These comprehensive and sophisticated dental services also transcend treating the teeth and gums. We can also ease the far-reaching effects of conditions like temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJDs) with occlusal splints.
What are occlusal splints?
These special devices fall under a treatment option called “oral appliance therapy.” The splints designed by Dr. Rafetto are custom fitted to your teeth and mouth. So, due to the customized nature of these appliances, they fit comfortably and are designed to function as intended for the effective treatment of occlusal disease. These conditions relate to the alignment of the upper and lower teeth when biting down. How these teeth come together can affect the health and function of neighboring and supportive issues and structures. These splints and related appliances support a balanced bite and improve patients’ quality of life by addressing the many symptoms and complications associated with such imbalances.
What options might be appropriate for me?
Depending on your needs, Dr. Rafetto may recommend appliances such as splints or “nightguards.” While the two are often used interchangeably, they have different design features and functions. Nightguards primarily protect the teeth, gums, and other structures from the effects of chronic teeth grinding or bruxism. Individuals with bruxism often grind their teeth and clench their jaws while asleep, a condition known as “nocturnal bruxism.” So, the “guard” is placed in the mouth before and worn during sleep. By cushioning the teeth, nightguards prevent tooth chips and cracks and damage to both natural tissues and dental restorations.
Occlusal splints may also be used to address the complications of bruxism, notably temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptoms. They reposition the lower jaw to promote a more natural “bite.” This repositioning allows the TM or jaw joint and its interconnected muscles to relax. Once relaxed, patients report improvements in the frequency and severity of headaches, facial and jaw pain, jaw stiffness and “locking,” and other TMJ disorder symptoms.
Why should I choose Bright Dental Brianna Rafetto D.M.D., P.A.?
Yes, you can find oral appliances at the store or online. However, these devices are designed to fit “all mouths,” which generally means they fit “no mouths”! When splints, guards, and other appliances do not fit well, they are uncomfortable and cause sores and other damage. They also tend to have low “patient compliance,” what good is a device that does not get worn?
Our truly custom-fit appliances are a great investment in your smile, health, and well-being. They are made precisely for your one-of-a-kind mouth. So, patients note that they are easy to adjust to and comfortable to wear. Due to their precision fit, they provide optimal protection to the teeth and restorations and also offer an effective therapeutic option by addressing the source of TMJD troubles. You also benefit from Dr. Rafetto’s use of only the highest quality materials. Your appliance is designed to hold up well, no matter what your teeth may put them through!
