Bright Dental – Brianna Rafetto D.M.D., P.A. is committed to providing the highest quality care that gets the best possible results, in the long-term interests of your smile, overall health, and wellbeing. To accomplish this, Dr. Rafetto and our office in Middleton, Delaware lean into preventative dental services. Protecting against damaging cavities and other oral disease is built on a foundation of regular “check-ups,” which include a professional teeth cleaning and thorough exam by Dr. Rafetto. During these exams, we can discuss other professional preventive services, and may even apply the likes of dental sealants as appropriate.

What are dental sealants?

As a preventative dental service, sealants are designed to protect vulnerable teeth from decay. A thin layer of material is applied to deep grooves and pits of a healthy tooth. Sealants help prevent food and bacteria from getting stuck within these deep grooves and makes it easier to keep the teeth clean at home.

Why are back teeth prone to developing decay?

The premolars and molars in the back of the mouth can be hard to reach and effectively clean. Brushing and flossing challenges are particularly apparent among children, especially as their motor skills are developing. Children and adults with special needs may also be challenged to thoroughly clean their back teeth. There are unique obstacles associated with these teeth, aside from their location. Due to their pitted and uneven surfaces, premolars and molars tend to trap bits of food and other disease-causing substances. When not removed properly, food and bacteria within these grooves provide a breeding ground for decay.

How do sealants protect back teeth?

True to their name, sealants “seal out” food. When the starches and sugars stay out of these nooks and crannies, they do not mix with bacteria in the mouth, which promotes the development of harmful plaque. This sticky bacterial film is a major risk factor, because it releases acids that erode the structure of the teeth. Eventually, without treatment, cavities or holes can form that weaken the tooth’s structure. In turn, sealants are a proven effective, incredibly safe and gentle, and also very affordable way to prevent cavities and protect the health and beauty of your smile from tooth loss.

How do you apply sealants?

The best part about sealants is that applying them is quick, easy and painless! First, we clean the teeth to be treated and ensure they are dry. Then, a conditioning product is applied to ensure the strongest bond between the sealant and each tooth. Once the teeth are prepped, the sealant material (a BPA-free resin) is painted on as a liquid, using a fine tip to ensure the sealant seeps into the pits and fissures. Lastly, the sealant is hardened with a special curing light. The whole process takes just a few minutes.

Are sealants a good idea for everyone?

At Dr. Rafetto’s Bright Dental, we generally recommend sealants for pediatric patients as a preventive measure. As soon as the first back teeth peek through, we can apply these thin coverings to stay ahead of any potential risks and problems. Older patients can benefit from sealants as well, as long as the teeth are completely free of disease.  To find out more, we welcome your specific questions.
